What is ikigai?
Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese word often translated as "reason for being" — what makes you get out of bed with a spark. In Japan, the concept is everyday and not necessarily tied to work. In the West, it became known through the 4-circle map: what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for. Your ikigai would sit where all four meet.
The 4 zones of the map
When only two circles meet, you're in an in-between zone — and each has its own flavor: Passion (love + good at) fulfills, but may not pay the bills; Mission (love + world needs) gives meaning, but may lack method; Profession (good at + paid) gives security, but can feel empty; Vocation (world needs + paid) is useful, but may not excite you. Knowing your zone today shows which circle to grow next.
Is this test scientific?
Ikigai is studied in research on purpose and wellbeing; the 4-circle diagram is a popular Western adaptation — a reflection tool, not a psychometric instrument. Use your result as a map for a conversation with yourself, not a verdict.
